Year 5 - Maths
Converting units
In this unit pupils will apply memorised unit conversions to convert between units of measure and solve problems involving converting between units of time and money.
You will learn to convert to and from fraction and decimal quantities of larger units.
1 mm = 0.001km. 1 g = 0.001 kg.
If two or more things have the same value, they are equivalent. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils see values like 0.25 l and convert it to 25 ml. Correction: The lesson presents fractions and decimals as parts of whole circles. As long as pupils know that 1 l = 1,000 ml, they should see from the representation that 0.25 l = 250 ml as 250 + 250 + 250 + 250 = 1,000.
