Year 5 - Maths

Solve problems involving different units of measure

Converting units

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will apply memorised unit conversions to convert between units of measure and solve problems involving converting between units of time and money.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to solve problems involving different units of measure.

Key Notes

  • If 1m = 100cm then 3m = 3 x 100cm = 300cm
  • If 100cm = 1m then 500cm = 5 x 100cm = 5m

Vocabulary To Learn

  • convert: To change a value or expression from one form to another, such as grams into kilograms.
  • represent: Represent means to communicate mathematical ideas through models.
  • calculate: Calculate means to choose one of the four operations to solve a problem.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Some pupils may need support with the decimal representation of measures and how to convert from larger units to smaller e.g. 1.2 l into ml.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

If 1m = 100cm then 3m = 3 x 100cm = 300cm. If 100cm = 1m then 500cm = 5 x 100cm = 5m.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'convert'

To change a value or expression from one form to another, such as grams into kilograms. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Some pupils may need support with the decimal representation of measures and how to convert from larger units to smaller e.g. 1.2 l into ml. Correction: Allow pupils to go back to previous work completed where necessary to see the units of measure divided up into 2, 4, 5 and 10 parts and represented with decimals, to provide a scaffold for them to use whilst completing the problems in this lesson.
