Year 5 - Maths
Converting units
In this unit pupils will apply memorised unit conversions to convert between units of measure and solve problems involving converting between units of time and money.
You will learn to solve problems involving different units of measure.
If 1m = 100cm then 3m = 3 x 100cm = 300cm. If 100cm = 1m then 500cm = 5 x 100cm = 5m.
To change a value or expression from one form to another, such as grams into kilograms. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Some pupils may need support with the decimal representation of measures and how to convert from larger units to smaller e.g. 1.2 l into ml. Correction: Allow pupils to go back to previous work completed where necessary to see the units of measure divided up into 2, 4, 5 and 10 parts and represented with decimals, to provide a scaffold for them to use whilst completing the problems in this lesson.
