In this unit pupils will identify the mathematical structures within stories and use their knowledge of additive structures to create stories and to solve problems.
You will learn to explain how a combination of different parts can be equivalent to the same whole.
The same whole can be composed in different ways. Different ways of composing the whole are equivalent.
Two expressions are equivalent if they have the same value. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may look at each rod as representing a number rather than focusing on the colour. Correction: Remind pupils that the rods have no numerical value and encourage pupils discuss the rods by their colour name. They may notice proportional relationships but these should not be labelled numerically.
