Dance: identity

Unit Summary

This unit is a thematic approach drawing upon personal experiences to consolidate and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Action-Space-Dynamics-Relationships to create, develop and analyse ideas, motifs and dances. They will use similarities and differences to form connections and contrast.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to create a motif involving a range of actions and use a variety of methods to develop it.

Key Notes

  • Move: being able to perform a range of actions in different ways improves competency.
  • Think: making choices involves reflecting on the options.
  • Feel: identifying the character traits in others requires integrity.
  • Connect: ensuring everyone contributes their ideas demonstrates respect.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • motif: a pattern of actions, seen more than once in a dance, that can be varied or developed
  • development: changes applied to a motif
  • question and answer: a choreographic relationship where the dancers perform different actions in an alternating pattern (one at a time)

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils should 'count' the music.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: being able to perform a range of actions in different ways improves competency. Think: making choices involves reflecting on the options.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'motif'

a pattern of actions, seen more than once in a dance, that can be varied or developed.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils should 'count' the music. Correction: Whilst some pupils can count music accurately, it can be an additional level of challenge for others and divert them from the task in hand. Most pupils will naturally 'feel' the music and be able to respond to the tempo and rhythm appropriately.
