'Lord of the Flies'
In this unit, pupils read and explore 'The Lord of the Flies' by considering Golding's message about human nature. They first read the novel, before analysing the characters Ralph, Simon, Jack and Piggy. They then look at setting and symbolism before planning and writing an essay on human nature.
You will learn to explain how characters and objects are presented in Chapter 1.
In Chapter 1, we meet the characters Ralph, Piggy and Jack who have contrasting personalities. Piggy seems to be the weakest because he has a number of physical ailments.

Mistake: Pupils often think the island in the novel is like a tropical paradise. Correction: Draw their attention to the suggestion of danger in the language used.
