In this unit, knowledge of circles and polygons is drawn upon to find the arc length and area of a circle sector and areas of complex compound shapes.
You will learn to calculate the area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapeziums efficiently.
The formula for the area of a rectangle is bh. The formula for the area of a parallelogram is bh.
The area is the size of the surface and states the number of unit squares needed to completely cover that surface. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils might find the area of parallelograms and triangles by multiplying the length of two adjacent edges which are not perpendicular. Correction: Calculating the area of a shape involves multiplying two perpendicular lengths. These may not be horizontal and vertical in the shape's initial orientation.
