In this unit, knowledge of circles and polygons is drawn upon to find the arc length and area of a circle sector and areas of complex compound shapes.
You will learn to calculate the perimeter of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapeziums efficiently.
The perimeter of any polygon can be found by adding but this may be time consuming. By considering the properties of the shape, there may be a more efficient method.
The perimeter is the distance around a 2D shape. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: "To find the perimeter, you just add together the numbers that you see.". Correction: The perimeter of a polygon is the sum of the lengths of all the sides of that shape. Not all sides have their lengths explicitly written. This could be due to sides having equal length, and the lengths of some sides shown with hash marks.
