Year 4 - Maths
Review of column addition and subtraction
In this unit pupils will revisit column addition with regrouping and column subtraction with exchanging to solve problems.
You will learn to add 3-digit numbers using column addition.
The addends are written in columns with the same value digits in the same column. The sum is recorded underneath the addends with the same value digits in the same column.
An addend is a number added to another. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: When finding missing numbers in column addition, pupils may find it difficult to identify whether they can add or subtract. Correction: Remind pupils that addends are parts and the sum is the whole. To find a missing part, we subtract the known part from the whole. To find a missing whole, we add the known parts together. Bar models or part-part-whole models can model this.
