Year 4 - Maths
Review of column addition and subtraction
In this unit pupils will revisit column addition with regrouping and column subtraction with exchanging to solve problems.
You will learn to use column addition with regrouping to solve problems.
Estimation gives you a value close to the correct answer. Start with the digits with the smallest place value so that regrouping can be represented.
Estimation means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may not make very accurate estimates for their calculations. Correction: This lesson explores inaccurate estimations. Estimations should be quick and easy to calculate, but when adding two addends, it's sensible to make one larger and one smaller so that the estimate is as accurate as possible.
