Year 4 - Maths
Review of column addition and subtraction
In this unit pupils will revisit column addition with regrouping and column subtraction with exchanging to solve problems.
You will learn to identify the minuend and subtrahend in column subtraction.
The minuend and subtrahend are written in columns with the same value digits in the same column. The subtrahend is written beneath the minuend.
The minuend is the number being subtracted from. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may confuse column subtraction and column addition, and forget where the whole appears in both. Correction: Emphasise starting with the whole. The minuend appears first in column subtraction. One part (the subtrahend) is subtracted and the difference appears beneath this.
