Year 4 - Maths
Review of column addition and subtraction
In this unit pupils will revisit column addition with regrouping and column subtraction with exchanging to solve problems.
You will learn to use column addition with regrouping in the ones and tens.
When using column addition, start by adding the numbers with the smallest place value first. If the sum of the ones or tens digits is ten or greater, regrouping is needed.
Column addition is a way of adding numbers by writing a number below another. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may make errors with regrouping in the ones and tens, particularly where there is regrouping in both. Correction: Model examples of regrouping with the pupils, including questions where regrouping in the ones causes regrouping in the tens. If necessary, use Base 10 blocks to help with the modelling.
