Year 6 - Maths
Multiplying and dividing by 2-digit numbers
In this unit pupils will extend their understanding of formal calculation strategies to multiply and divide by 2-digit numbers, explaining when other strategies are more efficient.
You will learn to divide by a 2-digit divisor including using long division.
Different strategies can be used to solve division problems. Multiplication facts are really useful in solving division problems.
Estimate means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may struggle to set out the long division algorithm correctly. Correction: Use the modelling from the lesson to focus on this, especially when writing multiples of the divisor (e.g. 3 tens × 17 = 51 tens) and subtracting this from the dividend.
