In this unit pupils will extend their understanding of formal calculation strategies to multiply and divide by 2-digit numbers, explaining when other strategies are more efficient.
You will learn to use long division and give the remainder as a fraction.
When giving the remainder as a fraction, the denominator is the same as the divisor. If the remainder can be simplified then the denominator will be a factor of the divisor.
A remainder is an amount left after a division. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils do not make the link between fractions and division and therefore do not understand why a remainder can be written as a fraction. Correction: Show that fractions can be the result of division e.g. one-quarter is one divided by four. Use models and examples to show that a remainder can be written as a fraction of a whole group (the divisor).
