Year 1 - Maths

Introducing zero

Counting, recognising and comparing numbers 0 - 10

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS of counting in all its forms to and from 10. They will compare and order numbers to 10 practically and will consider the role of zero to represent nothing.

Lesson Summary

You know what zero means and know when to use it.

Key Notes

  • Understand that zero is a number which shows that there is no amount.
  • Know the number word used is zero and the symbol used is 0
  • Recite rhymes alongside representations to show zero in different contexts.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Zero: Zero is the number that represents no amount or objects. When we add zero to a number, the result is just the number, unchanged.
  • Represent: To represent something is to show it in a different way.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Know later, when zero is added to another number, some children believe the answer is zero.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

Understand that zero is a number which shows that there is no amount. Know the number word used is zero and the symbol used is 0.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Zero'

Zero is the number that represents no amount or objects. When we add zero to a number, the result is just the number, unchanged. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Know later, when zero is added to another number, some children believe the answer is zero. Correction: Secure the idea that zero shows that there is no amount in many ways. Give children zero [noun] to hold.
