Year 1 - Maths

Ordering numbers to 10

Counting, recognising and comparing numbers 0 - 10

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS of counting in all its forms to and from 10. They will compare and order numbers to 10 practically and will consider the role of zero to represent nothing.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to order the numbers from zero to 10.

Key Notes

  • Know the order of numbers will not change and will always be said in the same order (stable-order principle).
  • Know we can order numbers by counting.
  • Know we can order numbers using our knowledge of 'greater than' and 'less than'.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Smallest: The smallest number is the one that comes before all the others in the count.
  • Largest: The largest number is the one that comes after all the others in the count.
  • Greater than: Bigger / larger in value or size.
  • Less than: Less than means having a smaller value than another number or set.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • May identify which number is greater than or less than another but then sequence incorrectly.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

Know the order of numbers will not change and will always be said in the same order (stable-order principle). Know we can order numbers by counting.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Smallest'

The smallest number is the one that comes before all the others in the count. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: May identify which number is greater than or less than another but then sequence incorrectly. Correction: Encourage children to visualise each number on a number line so they can see their order. Print a number line for constant use in class.
