Year 1 - Maths
Counting, recognising and comparing numbers 0 - 10
In this unit pupils will review their knowledge from the EYFS of counting in all its forms to and from 10. They will compare and order numbers to 10 practically and will consider the role of zero to represent nothing.
You will learn to find one less from a group using manipulatives and counting.
Secure understanding of one less as the number before. Use a variety of manipulatives and the stem sentence to deepen understanding that the number before is one less than .
One less than is when there is a smaller value by one. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may start counting on the number given and not recognise that the number before is one less. Correction: Model counting back and highlight the number before alongside the manipulatives. Give opportunities for pupils to remove one from a set.
