Year 1 - Maths
Recognise, compose, decompose and manipulate 2D and 3D shapes
In this unit pupils will compose, copy, extend and develop repeating and radiating patterns. They will explore, discuss and compare 3D and 2D shapes.
You will learn to explore, discuss, compare and sort 2D shapes.
Use everyday language to compare shapes e.g. wide, narrow, tall, short. Be able to count the sides and vertices of different 2D shapes.
The straight edges around the outside of a 2D shape. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may not recognise a 2D shape when it is presented in a different orientation. Correction: Allow children to handle cut-outs of 2D shapes so they can rotate them and explore how the shapes look in different orientations.
