Division by partitioning leading to short division (2 and 3-digits by 1-digit)
In this unit pupils will divide a 2-digit and a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using partitioning and representations and divide a 2-digit number by a single-digit number by using short division.
You can divide a 2-digit by a 1-digit number using short division (with regrouping).
If the tens number is not a multiple of the divisor then the remainder is recorded next to the ones digit. If there is a remainder after dividing the tens digit the tens are regrouped and the ones digit becomes a 2-digit number.
The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils not understanding and/or recording the regrouped amount. Correction: Continue to use language of unitisation. For example '7 tens ÷ 3 is 2 tens remainder 1 ten.' Ask what the regrouped amount represents.
