Year 5 - Maths
Division by partitioning leading to short division (2 and 3-digits by 1-digit)
In this unit pupils will divide a 2-digit and a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using partitioning and representations and divide a 2-digit number by a single-digit number by using short division.
You will learn to use a range of strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.
Look at the numbers in the problem to decide which strategy is most effective and explain why. Use partitioning strategies if the numbers are related by times tables.
The basic idea of multiplication is repeated addition. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may not be able to identify the key words leading to the operation. Correction: Highlight the keyword and read back the question highlighting the context of the word problem. Words such as 'of' will need exemplifying.
