Year 5 - Maths
Division by partitioning leading to short division (2 and 3-digits by 1-digit)
In this unit pupils will divide a 2-digit and a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using partitioning and representations and divide a 2-digit number by a single-digit number by using short division.
You will learn to use a range of strategies to solve division problems.
Look at the dividend and divisor to decide which strategy is most effective and explain why. Use partitioning if the dividend can be partitioned into multiples of the divisor.
Is a formal method of division often used when dividing any number by a one digit number. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may always choose short division to solve division equations. Correction: Encourage pupils to think about other strategies that they know. Ask questions such as 'Is this the most efficient method?'.
