Year 5 - Maths
Division by partitioning leading to short division (2 and 3-digits by 1-digit)
In this unit pupils will divide a 2-digit and a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using partitioning and representations and divide a 2-digit number by a single-digit number by using short division.
You will learn to solve multiplication and division problems in a range of contexts.
Look at the numbers in the problem to decide which strategy is most effective and explain why. Use partitioning strategies if the numbers are related by times tables.
Operation is a mathematical process. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may not be able to identify whether a question is a 1-step or 2-step problem. Correction: Read and highlight key words which identify the operation. Highlight the numbers which will lead to the calculation.
