Year 7 - Maths

Transformed objects

Transformations

Unit Summary

This unit introduces pupils to shape tranformations: enlargements, rotations, reflections and translations both by hand and with technology.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to identify whether a shape has been transformed or not.

Key Notes

  • There are clues that can be looked for to determine if a shape has been transformed.
  • If the size has changed, one shape may be an enlargement of the other.
  • If the orientation has changed, one shape may be a rotation of the other.
  • If the shapes are mirrored, one shape may be a reflection of the other.
  • If the shapes look identical but are in different places, one may be a translation of the other.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Transformation: A transformation is a process that may change the size, orientation or position of a shape.
  • Congruent: If one shape can fit exactly on top of another using rotation, reflection or translation, then the shapes are congruent.
  • Invariant: A property of a shape is invariant if that property has not changed after the shape is transformed.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Students may confuse reflections and rotations depending on the object.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

There are clues that can be looked for to determine if a shape has been transformed. If the size has changed, one shape may be an enlargement of the other.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Transformation'

A transformation is a process that may change the size, orientation or position of a shape. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Students may confuse reflections and rotations depending on the object. Correction: A reflection is the only transformation that changes the sense of the object, so check that first.
