Year 10 - Physical education

The importance of fitness components in sport

Physical training: health and fitness

Unit Summary

This unit will explore the relationship between health, fitness, exercise and performance before unpacking the different components of fitness. This understanding will include key definitions, how to test and train each but also which components are most important for different sports.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to apply the components of fitness to various physical activities and justify their importance on performance.

Key Notes

  • The most important components of fitness vary for different sports.
  • The main components of fitness required for different sports and sporting actions can be identified via analysis.
  • Most sporting activities require a variety of components of fitness for success.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • flexibility: the range of movements possible at a joint
  • power: the product of strength and speed, i.e. strength x speed
  • agility: the ability to move and change direction quickly whilst maintaining control
  • balance: the maintenance of the centre of mass over the base of support and reference can be made to whilst static (still) or dynamic (whilst moving)
  • reaction time: the time taken to initiate a response to a stimulus, i.e. the time from the initiation of the stimulus

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Students thinking that certain sports only need one type of component of fitness to be successful e.g. 100m sprinter just needs speed.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

The most important components of fitness vary for different sports. The main components of fitness required for different sports and sporting actions can be identified via analysis.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'flexibility'

the range of movements possible at a joint.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Students thinking that certain sports only need one type of component of fitness to be successful e.g. 100m sprinter just needs speed.
